How can massage help?
Massage therapy is an effective way of bringing the mind and body into a state of deep relaxation, with profound benefits for physical and mental health. The magic of massage therapy begins with the benefit of receiving human touch. Beyond the purely physical benefits associated with increasing circulation and releasing constrictions in the muscles and connective tissue, as humans we benefit deeply from skin to skin contact. The skin is the largest sensory organ we have, and is full of receptors that are specifically sensitive to touch. This is why receiving massage from a person is so much more effective than using a massage chair or massage gun. When these touch receptors are active, they send signals of safety and comfort to the brain, initiating healing and restorative processes in the body. Many people also find that in states of relaxation they enter into free association, similar to dreaming, which can help them make connections between thoughts, ideas and sensations they don’t usually have time to pay attention to. Massage can help to increase awareness of the mind-body connection, and help us learn deep appreciation for the bodies we have, despite the fact they don’t always work the way we want them to, or don’t look the way we would prefer. In this way, regular massage can also be a tool for introspection, self-understanding and self-care.
Holistic massage
Drawing from a wide range of Swedish, Deep Tissue and other techniques, I offer an intuitive approach to massage. We will have a brief consultation each time we meet to find out how you are feeling, where you are carrying tension and what you would like to focus on for the session. Whether you are looking for full body relaxation, you just want a back massage, or you want to spend a whole hour working out tension from your arms and hands, I draw from my toolbox of techniques to tailor the massage to suit your needs and meet you where you are at.
Prenatal and Postnatal massage
The prenatal and postnatal period can be a uniquely intense time of inner and outer change. Massage therapy can be a fantastic support both on a physical level, helping to ease the aches and pains of a rapidly changing body, and on an emotional level, providing a nurturing space which is all about you and your comfort. Not just for mothers - many of the impacts of the postnatal period occur whether or not you are the one to have given birth to your child: sleeplessness, the stress of a newborn, achey arms from carrying, adjusting to new demands on your time and emotional energy… Though I have a toolbox of techniques especially relevant for the postpartum body, I also think of postnatal work in broader terms applicable to dads, adoptive parents or anyone adjusting to having a new child in the home.I really enjoy working with expecting and new parents as they go through this transition and have specialist training in Pregnancy, Postnatal and Birth massage accredited by FEDANT.
